On September 30, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former National Security Advisor to the US President Thomas E. Donilon in Washington.
Wang Yi said that Mr. Donilon is a firm supporter of China-US cooperation and had actively promoted the construction of a new model of major-country relationship between China and the US when serving as National Security Advisor to the US President, making important contributions to the development of bilateral relations. Wang Yi expressed that, in order to earnestly implement the new model of major-country relationship between China and the US, the two countries should first establish strategic mutual trust, dispel strategic mistrust and prevent strategic misjudgment, especially in the Asia-Pacific region where the interests of China and the US are intertwined. Both sides should strive to ensure that China-US relations always move forward in the right direction. In the next stage, both sides should make good arrangements for President Barack Obama's attendance at the Informal Economic Leaders' Meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in November and his visit to China, so as to push the new model of major-country relationship between China and the US for more tangible cooperation results.
Donilon said that constructing a new model of major-country relationship between the US and China is in line with the common interests of both sides. The bilateral relations are currently at an important development stage, and the international community has paid high attention to its future trend. The two sides should constantly expand cooperation, manage and control differences and guide the bilateral relations with positive factors. President Obama's visit to China is very important to US-China relations. The two countries should work together to ensure a successful visit so as to vigorously push forward the development of the new model of major-country relationship between the two countries.
