Wang Yi: China and the US Should Establish Strategic Mutual Trust, Reduce Strategic Doubt, Enhance Strategic Cooperation and Prevent Strategic Misjudgment
2014-10-02 08:45

On October 1, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi elaborated China's policy towards the United States (US) while meeting the press in Washington together with Secretary of State John Kerry of the US.

Wang Yi firstly thanked Kerry for his congratulation on the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Wang Yi said that his current visit to the US is a return visit to Secretary of State Kerry's visit to China this February. It is also to communicate with the US in advance of and make political preparations for the important meeting between the two heads of state before President Barack Obama's upcoming visit to China.

Wang Yi stressed that China and the US enjoy far more common interests than divergences. The two countries are seeing more and more various fields with cooperation requirement, cooperation potential and cooperation necessity, and the list of cooperation programs is getting longer and longer. As the largest developing and developed countries in the world respectively, the two countries share a more important mission: to firmly build a new model of major-country relationship with no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation. It is in accordance with the common interests of the two countries, the common expectation of the international community as well as the trend of human development and progress, and it is a responsibility undertaken by China and the US for the world as well. Wang Yi said that this process will not be smooth, and there will be a variety of risks and challenges. The China-US relationship is like a huge ship on the sea, requiring the two sides to hold the correct heading, continuously inject impetus into its development, and jointly deal with all kinds of reefs and shoals. Wang Yi stressed that so long as the two sides establish strategic mutual trust, reduce strategic doubt, enhance strategic cooperation and prevent strategic misjudgment, this goal will definitely be achieved. Establishing the new model of major-country relationship between China and the US is neither "perfect tense" nor "future tense", but "continuous tense". The two sides should respect each other, manage and control divergences, overcome interferences, and make unremitting efforts for the establishment of a new model of major-country relationship.
